Four ways a sun gets drawn

Geometric suns use straight or triangular rays at fixed intervals, often with a second inner ring of shorter rays. They suit blackwork and ornamental work, they hold at 5 cm, and they are the version that depends most on an accurate stencil. Organic suns use flame shaped rays of varying length, which is more forgiving of a few degrees of error and reads warmer.

Sun faces come from old woodcut and engraving traditions and are usually drawn with heavy line and hatched shading. Dotwork and whip shaded suns build a gradient from the center outward, which looks beautiful and is the version most likely to fade unevenly, since a thinly dotted outer edge can vanish over fifteen years.

Getting the geometry right

Sun and moon together

Pairing a sun with a moon is one of the most requested designs and one of the easiest to make generic. The versions that work pick a specific relationship: the two overlapping as in an eclipse, a face split down the middle with sun on one side and moon on the other, or a sun on one person and a moon on another as a pair of tattoos.

If you are doing it as a couple or a sibling pair, decide early whether the two halves need to line up physically. Designs that only work when two arms are held together are charming and restrictive, since you will be looking at half a design most of the time. Two complete pieces that share a style usually age better as an idea.

Size, placement and how it holds up

A simple ray sun works down to 5 cm, and a sun face needs 10 to 12 cm. Anything with a dotwork gradient wants at least 8 cm so the dots have room to stay separate. Very small suns on fingers and behind the ear survive only as solid shapes with a handful of rays.

The circular shape sits well on the shoulder cap, where the curve of the deltoid suits it, and on the sternum, the back of the neck, the inner forearm and the hip. A sun on the shoulder distorts slightly when the arm moves, which is worth checking on the stencil. Bold and blackwork suns age extremely well, since solid black is the most stable thing you can put in skin.

Style traditions and borrowed designs

Polynesian and Aztec inspired suns are two of the most searched versions and both come from living cultures with their own rules about who wears what. Polynesian tattooing in particular uses motifs that carry family and status meaning, and artists trained in those traditions design them for a specific person rather than selling a pattern.

If you want that look without borrowing, ask for a geometric or ornamental sun built from your own motifs, or work with an artist from that tradition who will design it properly with you. Plenty of studios will tattoo a copied pattern without comment, which is not the same as it being a good idea.
