How much a sternum tattoo hurts

Most people put the sternum at 8 or 9 out of 10. The breastbone sits directly under thin skin with no fat over it, so the needle registers as a hard vibration through bone rather than a scratch on the surface. The narrow strip straight down the center is the sharpest part of the whole piece, and it is usually where the linework starts.

The underboob section hurts differently and not much less. Skin in the fold under the breast is soft, warm and quick to redden, and the artist has to stretch it hard to work on it. Symmetry and the centered stencil

Mirrored designs punish small errors, and sternum designs are almost always mirrored. Your body is not perfectly even: one collarbone usually sits slightly higher than the other, and the two halves of a rib cage rarely match. A stencil lined up correctly on the breastbone can still look tilted because the landmarks around it are uneven.

Good artists spend real time on this before any needle touches you. They mark the center line, stand you in front of a mirror, and adjust until the design looks straight to your eye rather than to a tape measure. Expect fifteen to thirty minutes of stencil placement and say something if it looks off. Once the first line is in, the position is fixed.

Healing under a bra, and the styles that suit the spot

A bra band, an underwire and the fold under the breast all press on a fresh sternum tattoo, and the area stays warm and damp under a top. Most artists tell you to go without a bra for the first few days where you can, then move to a loose wireless bralette in soft cotton for two to three weeks. A wire sitting across healing skin is the usual cause of a patchy underboob line.

Ornamental and mandala work dominates this placement because symmetrical pattern suits a symmetrical panel. Fine line botanicals, moon phases and short script along the bone also read well here. The piece hides under any top, so work is rarely the problem. Sun is, since the area catches direct light in a swimsuit and pattern work loses definition once it fades.
