Roman numerals get wide before they get tall, so measure the length as well as the letter height.
A date in roman numerals is one of the most common lettering requests artists get, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The numerals are fixed, so the only real decisions are the format, the lettering and the size. Get the conversion wrong and there is nothing to fix later except a cover up.
The converter is free, runs in your browser and needs no account. It gives you the numeral, the format options and a width in centimeters, which is the number people forget until the stencil is already wider than the spot they picked.
How roman numerals work
Seven letters carry every value. Numerals run largest to smallest and add up, so MMXXI is 1000 plus 1000 plus 10 plus 10 plus 1, which is 2021. The exception is the subtractive rule: a smaller letter placed before a larger one is subtracted, so 4 is IV and 9 is IX. Only I, X and C subtract, which is why 49 is XLIX and never IL.
There is no zero. A date like 9 April has no placeholder for the missing digit, so it reads IX and IV with nothing standing in. Clock faces print IIII for visual balance, and that single convention is where the belief that IIII is correct comes from. On a tattoo, use IV.
The seven letters
- I is 1, and it repeats up to three times, so 3 is III.
- V is 5, and it never repeats.
- X is 10, so 20 is XX and 30 is XXX.
- L is 50, which is why 40 is XL and 60 is LX.
- C is 100, so 400 is CD and 900 is CM.
- D is 500 and M is 1000, which covers any year you are likely to tattoo.
Choose the date format before the stencil
The same date can be written several ways, and the version you want has to be settled before anyone draws it. Day month year is normal in most of the world, month day year in the United States, and the two look identical to a stranger. Separators change the look as much as the order: dots between the groups, periods, a gap, or nothing at all.
Dots read cleanly and stop a long string turning into one block of letters. A plain gap works at larger sizes. Whatever you pick, write it on the reference you send the artist, since a stencil drawn from a screenshot copies whatever spacing was on your screen.
| Date | Day month year | Month day year | Letters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 February 2019 | XIV . II . MMXIX | II . XIV . MMXIX | 10 |
| 3 July 2021 | III . VII . MMXXI | VII . III . MMXXI | 11 |
| 9 April 2024 | IX . IV . MMXXIV | IV . IX . MMXXIV | 10 |
| 30 August 1970 | XXX . VIII . MCMLXX | VIII . XXX . MCMLXX | 13 |
| 25 December 1998 | XXV . XII . MCMXCVIII | XII . XXV . MCMXCVIII | 15 |
Where roman numeral tattoos fit, and how wide they get
A long numeral string is a wide tattoo. Fifteen letters at 1 cm tall runs roughly 12 to 15 cm across in plain capitals, more if the lettering has serifs. The inner wrist gives most adults 5 to 6 cm of flat width, which is why wrist numerals end up either tiny or wrapped around the arm where nobody can read them.
So the spots that suit the shape are the ones with length. Letter height is the other half of it: 8 mm or taller keeps capitals readable for decades, and 6 mm is the floor most artists accept. A plain number tattoo behaves the same way, whether it is a jersey number, a lucky number or a year on its own, and three or four letters fit almost anywhere.
Usable width by spot
- Inner or outer forearm, 20 to 25 cm along the arm, which takes almost any date in one line.
- Collarbone, 12 to 15 cm before it curves away, enough for a short date at 8 mm.
- Ribcage, 15 to 25 cm running with the ribs, and the easiest place for a long string.
- Spine, stacked in two or three groups down the back instead of one line.
- Inner wrist, 5 to 6 cm, so only a year or one group fits without wrapping.
Proofread the numeral, then proofread it again
The common disaster on this subject is simple. The numeral is wrong. A missing X, a V where an I belongs, a year converted from the wrong digit, and it is permanent the moment the needle moves. Artists do not check your arithmetic, and most will tattoo exactly what the stencil says.
Convert the numeral back to digits yourself, on paper, without the tool. Check the date against a calendar so you know the day existed, which matters for 29 February and for anyone working from memory. Then have a second person read it cold, without being told what it should say. If the date belongs inside a larger piece, design that part in the generator and keep the numeral as its own layer for the artist to draw by hand, since image generators still garble lettering.
Questions people ask
How do I use a roman numeral generator for a date?
Type the date and pick day month year or month day year. Each group converts separately, so 14 February 2019 becomes XIV, II and MMXIX. The year converts as a whole number, which is why 2019 is MMXIX and not the digits 2, 0, 1 and 9 converted one at a time.
What is the best roman numeral tattoo font?
Plain capitals with even stroke weight. They stay readable smaller than any other lettering and they age well, because there are no hairlines to close up. Serif capitals look traditional and need more width. Thin modern script is the risky choice, since the ends of an I and a V go first.
Why is 4 written as IV and not IIII?
Standard roman numerals subtract a smaller letter placed before a larger one, so 4 is IV and 9 is IX. Clock faces are the exception and often print IIII to balance the dial. On a tattoo, IV is the version people expect, and IIII reads as a mistake to anyone who notices.
How big should a roman numerals tattoo be?
Letter height drives everything. Keep capitals at 8 mm or taller and the string stays readable for decades. A ten letter date at that height is roughly 7 to 9 cm wide and a fifteen letter date 11 to 14 cm. Measure the spot first and let the available width set the height.
How much does a roman numeral tattoo cost?
Most land at the shop minimum, usually $80 to $150. A longer date on a forearm with careful spacing runs $150 to $300, because lettering takes longer to lay out than to tattoo. Price tracks time in the chair, so the layout work is what you are paying for.
