Drawing a semicolon small enough and heavy enough

The mark is a dot above a comma, and both parts have to survive. A dot tattooed at 1 mm can spread to nearly 2 mm over fifteen years, which turns a crisp semicolon into two blurred marks with no gap between them. Most artists will not go below about 1.5 cm total height, and 2 to 3 cm gives the shape real room.

Typography matters more here than in almost any other small tattoo. A semicolon drawn freehand tends to read as a stray mark, so artists usually pull the glyph from a real typeface and scale it. A serif face gives the comma a thicker body and a defined tail. A geometric sans gives a round dot and a clean hook, which holds better at very small sizes.

What makes one last

• At least 1.5 cm total height, and 2 to 3 cm if you want it sharp at twenty years
• A dot no smaller than about 2 mm across
• A visible gap between the dot and the comma, at least the width of the dot
• A comma tail with real weight in it
• A glyph taken from a real typeface rather than drawn by hand

If you are tattooing over scars

A lot of people want this on the inner forearm or wrist, and some of that skin is scarred. Scar tissue takes ink unevenly, so lines can spread in one spot and drop out in another, and the area is often more sensitive during the session. Most artists want a scar to be fully mature before working over it, which usually means at least twelve months and often closer to two years.

Talk about it at the consultation rather than on the day. Some artists decline this work entirely and will say so honestly. Those who do it often suggest a design with some forgiveness in it, such as a botanical line or a wave that can absorb an uneven patch, with the semicolon placed on clear skin nearby. Expect to be told a touch up may be needed.

Placement, and how much you want to explain

This is a public symbol, which makes placement a decision about conversation. On the inner wrist people will recognize it and some will ask. Behind the ear, on the inner bicep, on the ribs or on the back of the upper arm, it stays yours until you show someone. Neither choice is braver than the other, and plenty of people who wanted the visible version at twenty want a private one at thirty.

The finger and the side of the wrist are the two spots where a semicolon fades fastest, since the skin moves constantly and sheds quickly. If you want something that will still be legible in twenty years, the inner forearm, the inner bicep and the ankle are the steadier options.

The designs people combine it with

The most common is a butterfly where the body is a semicolon, which works because a butterfly body is already a vertical shape with a rounded top. A heartbeat line running into a semicolon is the second most common. Both need more room than a plain mark, roughly 4 to 6 cm, since the combination adds lines that have to stay apart.

Other versions replace the semicolon with a mark that means the same thing more quietly: a single comma, an ellipsis, a short line of morse, a date in small numerals. Some people set the semicolon inside a longer piece of lettering so it reads as ordinary punctuation to strangers and as itself to them.
