Which owl you actually want

Barn owls have a white heart shaped face, dark eyes and almost no ear tufts. Great horned owls have the tufts, orange eyes and heavy barring across the chest. Snowy owls are nearly white with fine dark flecks, which means very little black in the skin and a piece that goes soft within a few years unless the artist builds a dark background.

Pick the species before the style, because it changes the whole drawing. A barn owl face is a smooth pale oval and needs a dark surround to hold its edge, while a great horned owl gives the artist heavy contrast for free. Name the species in the reference you bring, or you will get a generic owl that looks like nothing in particular.

Styles that hold feather detail

Black and grey realism is the most requested and the most demanding. Feather barbs are built in layers with a 9 or 11 curved magnum, usually across two or three passes, and the artist needs room to separate the coverts from the flight feathers. Below about 14 cm those layers merge and you end up with a soft grey bird. Budget three to six hours for a realistic owl on the forearm.

Neo traditional handles owls well because it stylizes feathers into repeated shapes instead of copying them. A 2 to 3 mm outline, feather groups drawn as blocks, color held inside clean borders. Geometric and dotwork owls reduce the bird to facets or stipple density, and both survive shrinking down better than realism.

Placement and size, including the ones that fail

A perched owl is taller than it is wide, so the forearm, outer calf and side of the thigh all suit it at 12 to 20 cm. An owl with wings spread is the opposite shape and belongs on the chest, upper back or across the shoulder blades at 25 to 40 cm. Forcing a spread wing owl onto a forearm makes the artist fold the wings back awkwardly.

The common failure is a realistic owl under 10 cm. Eyes, beak and facial disc take most of the space, leaving a few millimeters for the whole body, and after five years that body is a grey mass. Small owls should be stylized: a line drawing at 6 cm, or a solid black silhouette at 5 cm.

What each size gives you

• 5 to 7 cm, silhouette or simple line owl, no internal feather detail
• 10 to 14 cm, stylized or neo traditional bird with blocked feather groups
• 15 to 25 cm, realism with separated flight feathers and a background
• 30 cm and up, spread wings across the chest or upper back

Ageing, and the add ons that date the piece

Owls age according to contrast. If your artist leaves real black in the pupils, the wing shadows and behind the head, the bird keeps its structure for fifteen years or more. Pieces built from light and mid greys alone go flat much sooner, often within five. Ask to see a healed photo of an owl done at least two years ago.

The owl with a clock, a rose and a mandala all in one piece was everywhere between 2012 and 2018 and now reads as a period piece. A skull under the owl's feet has the same problem. Simple pairings hold up better: an owl on a bare branch, an owl in front of a plain moon, or an owl holding one object that means something to you.
