The seed head is the whole drawing

The center of a sunflower is a double set of spirals curving in opposite directions, and the counts are almost always consecutive Fibonacci numbers, commonly 34 one way and 55 the other. Your eye recognizes that pattern even when you cannot name it. Draw the center as concentric rings or as random stippling and the flower looks wrong without anyone being able to say why.

Petals need the same treatment. Real ray florets are uneven: different lengths, some curled, a few torn or missing, and they overlap instead of sitting in a tidy fan. A ring of identical evenly spaced petals gives you a child's drawing of a daisy. Most artists draw the seed head first, then hang the petals off it at varying angles.

Botanical detail that makes it read

The yellow problem

Yellow is the least stable tattoo pigment there is. It sits high in the skin, it degrades under sunlight faster than any other color, and on a sunflower it is doing most of the work. A bright yellow sunflower on a forearm can look washed out by year six and patchy by year twelve, particularly on skin that gets sun.

Three approaches get around it. Pack the yellow far denser than looks necessary in the moment and accept it will still lighten. Outline every petal in black so the flower keeps its shape even as the fill fades. Or skip color and do the whole thing in black and grey, which suits sunflowers better than most flowers because the seed head is naturally dark and textured.

Size and placement

A single sunflower head with a visible spiral needs about 8 cm across. At 5 cm the center becomes a dark disc and the petals become a ring of ticks, which is fine if that is what you want but is not a sunflower. Add leaves and a bent stem and you are at 12 to 18 cm.

The round head suits the outer shoulder, the back of the upper arm, the front of the thigh and the hip. A stem with one open flower and a bud is a vertical composition that fits the forearm, the spine and the ribs. Sunflower chains running along a collarbone or around an ankle work if each head is at least 4 cm and the artist varies which way they face.

Combinations and aging

Sunflowers combine well with things that share the same rough, agricultural texture: wheat, bees, dried grasses, a jar, a hand. They combine badly with high detail subjects at the same size, because the seed head already carries a lot of texture and two busy elements next to each other merge as the tattoo ages.

For longevity, the black and grey version is the clear winner and a heavily outlined color version is second. Expect a color sunflower to want a touch up somewhere between years five and ten, mostly to bring the yellow back. Daily sunscreen makes a larger difference on this subject than on almost any other.
