The mane decides everything

Fur on a lion's mane grows in clumps, not in an even radiating fringe. It falls heaviest under the jaw, sweeps back over the ears and parts unevenly across the forehead. Artists who hatch the whole mane at one angle and one density get a tattoo that looks fine for four years and then reads as a grey circle with a face inside it.

What survives is contrast and space. The strongest realistic lions have solid black in the deepest parts of the mane, untouched skin in the highlights, and clear channels between fur clumps that look too wide on the stencil.
