Designing something that survives on a hand

Every choice here should buy durability. Lines heavier than you would use on a forearm, at least 2 mm of space between parallel lines, no lettering under 8 mm tall, and no shading so light it depends on a few grey tones to read. Solid black holds longest. Soft grey wash and pale color are the first things to disappear.

Composition matters as much as line weight. A design broken into separate elements survives patchy healing far better than one continuous image, because a gap that appears in the middle of a single flowing line is obvious while a gap between two motifs is not. Ask to see your artist's healed hand work from two or more years ago.

Pain, tendons and blowouts

The back of the hand is 7 to 8 out of 10. There is almost nothing between the needle and the bones and tendons, and the area between the knuckles is the sharpest part. The palm is worse again and fades so heavily that many artists decline it outright.

Thin skin over hard structures also makes blowouts more likely, where ink spreads under the surface and leaves a blue haze beside a line. This is a placement where the artist's experience matters more than their style. Hand tattoos are a specializm, and the difference between someone who does them weekly and someone who does them twice a year is visible in year three.

Healing through constant hand washing

You cannot rest a hand. It gets washed, it goes in and out of sleeves, it carries bags and it touches everything. Pat dry rather than rubbing, keep alcohol gel off the healing skin, and use a thin layer of aftercare rather than a thick one, since a wet tattoo under a glove is worse than a dry one.

Rings have to come off for two to three weeks if the design reaches the fingers or the base of them, and swelling in the first days can make a ring tight anyway. If you wear gloves at work, talk to your artist about timing, because a latex glove over a weeping tattoo for eight hours is the fastest route to a patchy heal.

Visibility at work and the honest version

A hand tattoo cannot be hidden. Long sleeves stop at the wrist, and makeup over a tattoo lasts an afternoon at best. In healthcare, law, finance, teaching and front of house hospitality, visible hand ink still affects how some employers and clients respond, whatever the current policy says on paper.

That is worth thinking through before the appointment rather than after. Many people start with a small piece on the side of the hand below the little finger, which a resting hand position hides, and move outward once they know how their workplace reacts. Some artists will not tattoo hands on a client with no other visible work, and will say so when you enquire.
