The two ways to draw the wings

You can freeze the wings or blur them, and the choice decides the whole tattoo. Frozen wings are drawn as ordered feather rows in a clear shape, usually swept back in an arc. They hold detail, they age predictably, and they make the bird look like a specimen rather than a living thing. This is the safer option and it suits blackwork, fine line and traditional.

Blurred wings are drawn as a soft grey arc or a pair of overlapping ghost shapes with almost no outline. They look alive and they are much harder to keep. Soft grey with no line to hold it is the first thing to disappear as a tattoo ages, so artists who do this well anchor the blur to something solid, such as a darker feather edge at the shoulder joint or a flower the wing crosses.

The bill, the gorget and the flower

The bill is the most fragile part of the design. It is long, thin and straight, and drawn at hairline weight it either bleeds into a fuzzy spike or vanishes. Artists give it real weight with a taper and keep a clean break where it meets the head. On a bird under 8 cm, the bill often gets shortened slightly from life, which nobody notices and which keeps the shape sharp.

For the throat patch, the highlight does the work. A hard bright edge against a near black body reads as iridescence. Soft blended color reads as a stain. If you want a flower with the bird, pick one it would actually feed from: trumpet vine, fuchsia, salvia, bee balm or columbine. A hummingbird hovering at a rose is a design nobody has ever seen outside a tattoo.

Size, placement and cost

The practical floor is about 7 cm from bill to tail, and 10 to 12 cm once you want feather separation and a flower. Below 7 cm the wing rows merge and the bill thickens. A hummingbird is a diagonal subject, which suits the back of the shoulder, the outer forearm, the ribs and the front of the thigh. Behind the ear and on the ankle work at small sizes if the design is simplified.

Expect two to four hours for a 12 cm color bird with a flower, which lands around $300 to $700 at typical rates. Black and grey versions run faster and cheaper. Realistic color hummingbirds are one of the pieces artists most often ask to do across two sittings, because packing saturated green over black is slow work and the skin gets irritated.

How it ages, and what people regret

The greens and blues on a hummingbird hold reasonably well if they are packed over a dark base. Magenta and pink on the throat are the first to go, often noticeably lighter by year six. Watercolor hummingbirds with no linework are the most common regret, because a splash of loose color with nothing holding it reads as a bruise once it has spread for a decade.

The other regret is scale. People ask for a 5 cm hummingbird because it sounds delicate, then find that at three years the wings have become a grey smudge behind a thick bill. If you want something genuinely small, ask for a silhouette or a single line contour instead of a shrunken detailed bird.
