Most people who want this are working from one person's actual handwriting, usually someone who has died, and usually from a card or a letter that is in a drawer somewhere. The quirks are the point: the way they closed an a, the pressure on a downstroke, the signature they wrote a thousand times without thinking about it.

The drawing tool is free, works in your browser and needs no account. Use it to sketch a version, to test stroke weights, or to clean up a line you traced. If you have the original writing, the scan matters more than anything the tool does, so start there.

Getting a usable source

Everything downstream depends on the scan. A flatbed scanner at 600 dpi gets a letter or a card clean in one pass, and a small signature on a document is worth 1200 dpi. Lay the paper flat on the glass and scan in greyscale or colour, never in black and white mode, so the faint strokes survive.

If you only have a phone

  • Lay the paper flat on a plain surface in even daylight, away from direct sun.
  • Hold the phone parallel to the page, directly above it, with the whole page in frame.
  • Keep your shadow and the phone's shadow off the paper, and leave the flash off.
  • Shoot it as large as you can and send the full frame. Do not crop to the words.
  • Photograph more than one sample if you have them, so the artist can see how that person formed the same letter twice.

What an artist needs from the scan

A scan at a known size, and a decision about line weight. Write the measured width of the original beside the file or in the photo, because a signature that was 7 cm across on a card tells the artist what its natural proportions are.

Size, weight and placement for handwriting

A ballpoint lays about 0.3 mm of ink and the lightest line a 3RL holds is nearer 0.4 to 0.5 mm, and it widens with age. So the artist rebuilds the shape at a weight that will survive, keeping the letter forms and the thick and thin of the original. A hairline traced exactly looks right on paper and closes into a smudge in skin.

Handwriting is wider than it is tall, usually by three to five times, so a signature 12 cm wide is only 3 or 4 cm high. Measure the lowercase height rather than the capitals: 8 mm is the floor for connected script, 12 mm if there are crossing loops. A short phrase at that height runs 10 to 18 cm across.

That shape suits the inner forearm along the arm, the inside of the upper arm, the ribs, the collarbone, the chest over the heart and the outer calf. A wrist takes a signature only if it is short. Hands, fingers and feet fade fastest, and thin handwriting there wants touching up every year or two. Expect 30 to 60 minutes in the chair, and the shop minimum of $80 to $150 for a small signature.

When the handwriting is from someone who has died

Two practical things come first. Ask the family before you take a card out of a shared box, because somebody else may want that one. And scan it before anything else happens to it. Keep the original and do not cut it up to get a cleaner scan, which is the one part of this that cannot be undone.

What people usually choose is short. A signature. One line from a letter. The way they signed off. A line from a recipe in their own hand. Dates go underneath in roman numerals more often than in digits. The inner forearm is the common placement for a piece you want to read yourself, the inside of the upper arm or the chest for one you would rather keep private.

Many artists suggest waiting a few months after a death before a memorial piece, because what you want at week two is often not what you want at month six. The handwriting will still be there. When you are ready, build the design around the writing in the generator and keep the handwriting as its own layer for the artist to draw by hand, since generated lettering is unreliable.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I get a tattoo of someone's handwriting?

Yes, and it is one of the few tattoos almost nobody regrets. The artist works from a scan of the real writing, redraws it at a line weight that holds in skin, and keeps the letter shapes. What they cannot do is invent handwriting from a description, so the source document matters more than the artist's own style.

How do I scan handwriting for a tattoo?

Flatbed scanner, 600 dpi, greyscale, paper flat on the glass, and 1200 dpi for a small signature. With a phone, lay the page flat in even daylight, shoot from directly above with the flash off, keep your shadow off the paper, and send the uncropped file.

How much does a signature tattoo cost?

A small signature is usually the shop minimum, $80 to $150 in most of the US and similar in euros or pounds in Europe, for 30 to 60 minutes of work. A longer phrase in handwriting runs $150 to $300, because the redraw and the layout take longer than the tattooing does.

Will thin handwriting hold up as a tattoo?

Only if it is redrawn at a weight the skin can hold. A ballpoint line is thinner than the thinnest line a needle lays, so a traced hairline either breaks up or spreads into a blur within a few years. Rebuilt at 0.5 mm or heavier, with the original pressure changes kept, it ages as well as any fine line work.

Where is the best place for a handwriting tattoo?

The inner forearm if you want to read it yourself, the inside of the upper arm or the chest if you want it private, and the ribs or collarbone for a longer line. All of those hold lettering well. Hands, fingers and feet do not, and a signature there will need touch ups.
