Working around the bone

The two bone knobs are the landmarks. Tattooing directly across them hurts most and holds ink least well, because the skin there is thin, stretched and constantly rubbed by footwear. Artists who work ankles often place the design in the softer hollow just above or behind the bone instead.

An ankle band is the other common request. On a 24 cm ankle a band runs about 24 cm of length and 1.5 to 3 cm of height, and it has to pass over both bone knobs, so it will hurt for part of its length. Solid or heavily patterned bands hold up better than thin delicate ones.

Healing and getting back to training

The ankle joint flexes with every step, so the skin over it never rests. Surface healing takes about 3 weeks, slightly longer than an arm. Walking is unavoidable and fine. Running, jumping rope, football and anything in tight footwear wait 14 days. Cycling is usually manageable sooner if your shoe collar sits below the piece.

Keep the area clean and dry, and wash immediately after any training. Because it sits close to the ground, an ankle tattoo picks up dust and dirt more than an arm does. Pools, hot tubs, saunas, lakes and the sea are out for 3 to 4 weeks, and a beach holiday within a month of an ankle tattoo is a bad plan.

Visibility and styles that last here

Socks and trousers cover an ankle tattoo, and most men find it effectively invisible at work all year. It shows with shorts, sandals or low socks. Fading is the real long term issue: footwear friction and sun on the lower leg make ankle work one of the faster fading placements after hands and fingers.

That pushes the choice toward bold. Heavy lines, solid black and simple shapes survive here for 10 to 15 years. Fine script, small detailed scenes and micro work usually need a touch up within 5 to 7 years. If you want something detailed on the lower leg, moving it 10 cm up onto the calf buys you far more room and a much slower fade.
